memorial day

We spent the last 72(+) hours in Eureka visiting my parents for the long holiday weekend. After a really, really long drive down, we spent saturday at the kinetic sculpture race in Arcata. It is really the most amazing event - all vehicles are human powered, and the level of creativity is astounding. the kids seemed to really like it this year, especially the shark and the pirate ship. as always, it is nice to get a Humboldt County fix every once in awhile.
We spent the rest of the weekend at the beach and hanging out at my parents house, which is like a resort. The kids have deemed the apartment  "the big house" - someday they will get a kick out of the nickname. While Mike and I got some quality (and very much needed) time out, Miles got to drive the tractor around the property and had a great time playing with his Poppy. That night we made s'mores  (harder than you would think, since finding vegetarian marshmallows are really hard to find), also surprising - Mike's first time making them. We really did grow up on opposite sides of the tracks.

It is always interesting to go back "home" - there are so many things I miss (Los Bagles, Arcata Community Forest, the ocean, the laid back life style, MY PARENTS!!). It is this crazy love/not like so much push/pull I have with that area. When I am there, I am constantly thinking what if, but the minute we get back on 101 heading, North I remember why we moved to this area.

Oh, Eureka, such a nice place to visit. Thanks for being such a great place to grow up.
